The Mikati Telecommunications Research Center
Telecommunications is a sector that supports
whole economies – all the industries depend on and derive benefits
from advances in the sector, ranging from increased efficiencies and
productivity to enhanced customer acquisition and retention. Advances
in telecommunications dramatically transform the way people live,
work, operate, communicate and conduct business. The last few years
have witnessed explosive growth in new applications of modern
telecommunications in the Middle East. The pace of development in
mobile communication, the Internet and satellite communication in the
region has been breathtaking. The equipment is advancing constantly;
the purchase and installation costs are high - by the time the
equipment is paid for, there's a good chance it's obsolete. Given that
telecom investment is long term, capital intensive and constantly
evolving, how do regional players compete in the global connectivity
business?
Time, money and vision are needed to advance high
risk enabling technologies and business models. The Mikati Telecom
Research Center is dedicated to funding faculty research initiatives
that provide a deeper understanding of the Telecom sector and its
regional implications; to advance telecommunications and information
technology applications, policy and competitive issues associated
with regional information infrastructure development.
